The Internet is now prevalent in everyday life and used extensively by adults and kids and when it is used beneficially it is very good, but when it is used malevolently it can have extremely severe consequences.
Cyberbullying is a growing problem with increasing numbers of people including young kids and celebrities using the internet especially social media sites. Because online communication tools have become an important part of our lives, it is not surprising that some have decided to use the technology to be malicious or menacing towards others in some case causing serious harm to victims.
It is estimated between 460,000-560,000 Australian school children experience cyberbullying annually with students aged 10-15 mostly at risk. Studies have found that it is more harmful than simple name calling; it leads to serious psycho-social and life problems, or even worse.
Australian Government Market Statistics on Cyber Bullying. June 2014
Research has found:
• Children who are bullied are 3 times more likely to show depressive symptoms
• Children who are bullied are 9 times more likely to have suicidal thoughts
• Children who bully have a 1 in 4 chance of having a criminal record by 30
• Children bullying has a strong correlation to domestic violence
Whilst the Internet can have consequences the prevalent use by children and youths provides the avenue for us to identify and assist them with their problems.
